Internet Data of Millions of Thai Citizens Revealed

A database of Internet data belonging to millions of Thai internet users has been released. Real-time internet activities of the users can be tracked with the resulting data.
AIS, the largest cellular network in Thailand, has taken a database offline after billions of real-time internet data has emerged from millions of Thai internet users. Security researcher Justin Paine said in a blog post that he found the database, DNS queries and Netflow data on the internet, without a password. By accessing this database, Paine stated that they can learn what an internet user or household is doing on the internet in real time.

Paine warned AIS on the open database on May 13, but after receiving no response for a week, he informed Thailand’s National Computer Emergency Team, also known as ThaiCERT. Access to the database was interrupted shortly after ThaiCERT contacted AIS.

AIS spokesperson Sudaporn Watcharanisakorn stated that the owner of the data is AIS and apologizes for the vulnerability. The AIS spokesperson said: “It is true that a small amount of non-personal, critical personal information is briefly revealed during a test in May. All of the data relates to internet usage levels and does not contain personal data that can identify any user. We acknowledge that our procedures are inadequate due to this incident and we apologize for this reason. ”

According to this information in Tech Crunch, there are incorrect parts in the statements made by the spokesperson. DNS queries are like a normal side effect of internet use. Whenever you visit a website, the browser turns the Internet address into an IP address, which gives the browser information about where the website is located.

DNS queries; Although it cannot carry sensitive data such as private messages, emails or passwords, it can determine which websites you access and which applications you use. This means a big problem for activists and journalists who can cause internet records to be identified.

Thailand’s internet law authorizes authorities to browse internet user data. There is one of the harshest censors in Asia in Thailand. It is completely forbidden to criticize Thailand’s royal family, national security and certain political issues. The top management in 2015 asked Facebook to censor certain users, but this was rejected by the social media giant. The administration, which said that it would ban Facebook across the country, later gave up its promise.

Thanks to DNS queries, many things can be learned about a person’s activities on the internet. Using this data, Paine showed that which devices are available, which antivirus program is used, which browsers are used, which social media applications and websites are frequently visited.

Of course, this becomes easier on the internet that a single person uses. It is much more difficult to track the activities of a particular person in offices or in homes where multiple people use an Internet. Advertisers also find DNS data very valuable for targeted ads.

ITT will produce masks from waste plastic bottles

Indian Institute of Technology (ITT) researchers have announced that they have developed high-efficiency mask making technology that can be washed and used up to 30 times using waste pet bottles.
The Indian Institute of Technology team in India, which has been on the agenda since the first day of the coronavirus pandemic has reacted to the social distance and quarantine practices, announced that they have developed a technology for high-efficiency masks.

The team has also taken a step towards environmental pollution and waste by using waste plastic bottles for the mask they have developed through the electro fiber drawing method. Researchers first smashed waste plastic bottles. Afterwards, they melted the waste plastic bottles that they disintegrated through pressed nanofiber and melting agent.

According to information shared by Assistant Professor Sumit Sinha Ray, an expert at the Indian Institute of Technology, the ITT (Indian Institute of Technology) team applied a different method for their masks that provide equivalent filtering with N95 and other medical masks. In the mask developed by the team, waste plastic bottles were preferred to obtain a nano-sized non-woven fabric texture.

In this case, one of the first things that come to your mind is whether plastic is safe for use. Sumit Sinha Ray clarifies this issue as well. It means that this nano-fiber tissue obtained from waste plastic bottles transformed into a new structure with the solution used is purified from all of the other components that cause bacteria and infections. Ray even claims that the success of these developed masks in breathing is better than many other masks available on the market.

Stating that the preference of waste plastic bottles in the development of the mask will contribute not only to environmental pollution but also to the economy, Ray adds that his production costs will be reduced by half thanks to the materials and methods they use.

When stars like the Sun form a system around them, Earth-like planets begin their lives as beds of liquid magma. According to scientists, it is easier to spot these magma ocean planets near Sun-like stars. Such planets emit so much heat that scientists can observe the glare from them using the next generation of infrared telescopes.

These ‘young worlds’ emit a significant part of their energy in the form of heat, making it easier to locate them. Of course, this doesn’t make things ‘easy’, it just makes it ‘a bit easier’. These positions are found in young star groups less than 100 million years old and are called ‘young moving groups’. These groups typically contain only a few tens of stars, and before we couldn’t decide if we found all the stars in each group because they were behind the Milky Way galaxy.

The good news is that it will be easier to find hot celestial bodies of liquid rocks that will eventually become a Earth-like planet. The bad news is that the Earth-like planets take millions of years to mature and cool down. Moreover, there is no guarantee that a planet with the right materials can be in an orbital region that can make life permanent.
